First of all, I don't know how familiar anyone reading this might be with the term "rail gun". Most would probably recognize it as the weapon of choice in most futuristic first-person shooter video games.
But what exactly IS a rail gun? Simply put, it's a weapon that fires projectiles using electromagnetism instead of gunpowder. Not only that, but they fire these projectiles at a much higher velocity.
In real life, a rail gun would have to be like ten meters long to shoot a projectile at 4 km/s (I'm told that's about 10 times as fast as an average rifle)
But for the sake of the sci-fi world that Ghostbusters takes place in, I'm going to assume that you could make a railgun roughly the size of a very large pistol, that could fire just as effectively, assuming it had a sufficient power source...say, one of the XGB proton canisters? (I keep using the d**n things because they're relatively cheap and effective for a short period of time, like a giant battery)
Anyway...why would you need such a firearm when the proton packs work just fine?
Well think about this. A lot of non-ghost entities have some seriously thick skin. The proton beam's just gonna burn marks all over 'em, and a normal gun's bullets are gonna bounce right off.
Then, you pull out the Rail Gun. You load the chamber with a few shells that, since they don't have to contain gunpowder, can be made of really fragile glass and loaded full of stuff like holy water, garlic, really tiny religious charms like prayer beads, or whatever. Now suppose these special anti-supernatural bullets could also be tipped with silver, wood, or what-have-you, depending on the creature your fighting?
Now you've got the necessary force to pump a particularly thick skinned vampire, lycanthrope, etc. full of the proverbial lead.
That would be pretty d**n handy, wouldn't it?
With a weapon like this, you would have control over just how much force you're firing with.
You could turn it way down and fire rubber-tipped shells full of positive mood slime or something to calm down a possessed human.
Hell, you could probably even fashion a bullet that would carry a positive charge and when lodged into ectoplasm, like a ghost's body, stun it as if it were held in a proton beam for a short time. Just imagine a weapon with some of the power of the proton pack, but easier to aim and without all the property damage...
So what do you guys think?
