I thought perhaps with the team back from hiatus, and me with even more knowledge to share with the rest of the world (that perhaps I shouldn't), I'd at last throw my hat into the ring as the GBWC's resident expert.
So, from the Archives of Dr. Jeffrey R. Chrismer, Occultist Ph. D...
This topic is for questions, classifications, and general discussion pertaining to the occult as it applies outside of the world of typical Ghostbusting practices.
So basically, the living dead, angels and demons, other dimensions, summoning, spellcasting, and just generally weird metaphysical stuff.
If there's a cult devoted to it, I know more than I ever should about it. Or to put it more creatively, If Belmont's got a hand in it, I've got a finger or two.

::in kiddy voice:: Story time! Story time!
Can we hear about demons and how one might possibly find his way to Tennessee to enslave the Cherokees there and.....
Or just talk about demons in general. lol

Demons are a complicated subject. Typically, when we as a society think of the creatures we generally refer to as demons, it's because we believe they came from Hell/Hades/The Abyss/whatever you wanna call the place where the souls of bad people are said to go when they die.
Though the existance of Hell cannot be definitively proven, there is more than one dimension out there that fits the general "fire, brimstone, and nasty, torturous monsters running around" idea of the place. Metaphorically, Hell is below Earth, as it's supposed to be underground and cavernous looking, so we call these places "the lower planes".
And so, a demon is a malevolent entity originating from a lower plane.
Less educated or more religious people often feel compelled to name anything and everything supernatural a "demon". To them, ghosts are demons, psychics and magi are possessed by demons, every time you sin, a demon made you do it. In most cases, this is just foolishness.
In fact, Demons usually only appear in corporeal forms. The Balrog from Lord of the Rings is actually a fairly accurate example of what the more physically dangerous demons may look like.
And then there are your energy vampires, your succubi, creatures with human forms, "demons in disguise" if you will, as well as cases where people did indeed "sell their souls", and their bodies are possessed or they were at the very least gifted with PKE-based talents they would have been incapable of previously.
Truth is, even I can't say for sure what is and what is not a demon. Some Class V and VII ghosts technically qualify as "demons", because they are not actually dead people's souls, but in fact some alien force summoned into our world.
I'm told that magi can sense what kind of creatures do and do not come from the lower planes. It has something to do with seeing auras of certain colors, I guess.
As far as summoning them, I have to admit to knowing a bit about the subject, but it would be unwise to publish such things on a public forum...

I was thinking more along the lines of a Balrog...or the non-fiction equivalent thereof, that is. I don't know if even Belmont quite measures up to Gandalf the Gray just yet, despite his claims...
It's also interesting to note that there is a discernable difference between a "demon" and a "devil". The former tend to behave more chaotically and thrive on anarchy, while the latter prefer to use law and order to their advantage and manipulate their ways into positions of heirachical power, not unlike politicians.
I actually know most documented breeds of lower-planar entity by sight, and believe me, memorizing that stuff is NOT an easy feat to accomplish. Ninja chi-spells are easier than that.

Jeff,
I believe your familiar with who I am, so I dont think an intro is necessary. My team recently became aware that a copy of the thought to be destroyed Book of the Dead "Necronomicon Ex Mortis" has shown up here in Tampa. We have not been able to secure it because its been isolated incidents popping up where people have been possessed by Candarian Demons and weve had to go out and figure out a way to stop them.
The reason I'm reporting this is, we've had to order a shipment of Slime Blowers because we dont want to kill these people and that seems to be the only other method WE have of getting rid of the demons (but thats why we ordered the slime blowers). So I was wondering if you have some kind of knowledge of the Candarian Book of the Dead that we dont already have. I am aware as of now that it is bound in human flesh, inked in blood, contains burial rights, funerary incantations and demon resurrection passages, it can also apparently be used to summon sub-human creatures, which we've managed to zap and trap along the way. Give us a shout as to other stuff you may know of.

Having never encountered the book itself, I don't know much that can't be found in an official report, but I will say this.
There are either multiple copies in existance, or the book possesses the ability to teleport itself. It seems to show up all over the place.
I know the original team in NY had an encounter with the book and a cult using it to summon Chthulu. Then there's that Williams guy in Michigan who had the horror movies made about him. And I don't think you're the first Franchise to encounter the "deadites" either. I know Dr. Belmont also claims to own a copy.
I heard rumors of someone acquiring a translator's notes and mass producing the damn thing, but if you've seen the book and it is indeed the one made of flesh and blood, it's most likely the original copy.
That's about all the info I personally have on the thing.
The mood slime solution for the possessed victims does indeed seem like a viable alternative to the old bodily dismemberment strategy too, so kudos on that.

[glow=blue,2,300]Hmm. Once again, it is conclusively proven that reading can be dangerous to your health. Talk about a "book burning"...
But anyway. I hope I'm not interrupting, but the discussion seemed to be winding down. I have a persistent question nobody seems able (or even willing) to answer.
Last summer, I was killing time aboard the permanently moored cruise ship Queen Mary at Long Beach, whose paranormal reputation has attracted ghost hunters from around the world-- so many that a room has been perpetually set aside aside for thier exclusive use. (Visit this website to verify my facts- I swear I'm not putting you on here.)http://www.queenmary.com/pressroom.php?page=news_release&news_id=85 While there, I had a discussion with Erika Frost, the resident psychic, who gives guided "tours of the supernatural" there nightly. She was somewhat surprised to see me; apparently, before my appearance, she'd had yet to openly communicate with any spirit on board! Shy folks all, I suppose.
I asked her if she could help me classify myself. Some people like to know thier signs of the Zodiac or birthstone, but I'd just like to know which class and type of spook I am. She said she'd never had that kind of training, so I've been left in suspense ever since.
Can anybody offer an answer? Even an educated guess would be nice. I already checked out the "Ghost Classification" list, and it wasn't much help.
P.S.: Just in case you're interested, the QM might have a job for you guys. Shortly before I arrived, some lunatic poltergeist crashed a tattoo convention in one of the ballrooms. I went to check it out, and the mess was horrific: food and dishes and napkins all over the place. Nobody was hurt, but the naughty ghost has yet to be found and evicted. [/glow]

It sounds like you're what we'd call a class III, free floating, full torso apparition. If your not sure what that means, go here.

[glow=blue,2,300]Cool. You totally nailed me. Excellent. Next time I go to a ghost bar, I can do the whole "lounge lizard" act: "Hey, baby, what's your class?" [/glow]

Mr. Hicks did indeed classify you correctly. As soon as you are able to remember more of your pre-death existance, and thus enable us to acertain your living identity, you would be immediately reclassified a Class 4.
There is some confusion to this day as to the proper classification system, mostly because some of the animation writers didn't understand the system and essentially made up their own system which was essentially a simple power scale. The official GBI system (which Dr. Stantz and I developed) leaves PKE strength out of the equation (save for the Class 7). ----------------------------------------------------- Dr. Chrismer is correct about the history of the Necronomicon. It's an area of much confusion to this day--I've personally encountered the book twice, first in New York in 1985 (when a cult stole the copy on display at the New York Public Library, and used it to summon Cthulhu himself. The second was in 1990, when a Russian cult summoned the entity Raymond and I believe (but are not 100% certain) was Cyaega.
Suffice it to say, anything involving that tome is worrisome.

Yeah, I'd agree with that Professor Spengler... If this gets worse I'm gonna take a trip up to New York to see a man named Ash Williams in Parkview Hospital. He's spent a LOT of time with this thing and he may know a way to stop it.

[glow=blue,2,300]Ash Williams... As in "Chainsaw Fingers" Ash Williams? Ooooh... remind me to keep my distance from Tampa from a while. I got the feeling you guys are in for some pretty heavy sugar. (When it's something bad enough to give a ghost the creeps, you know it's serious.)[/glow]
