When I purchased the GBWC.net domain from GoDaddy.com two and a half years ago, I did notice some blurb about "Free Web Hosting With Domain Purchase" but I looked around the web site and saw their "WebSite Tonight" program and thought it didn't look any better than Freehomepages.com (which has been the host of the GBWC site since the beginning, over a year before there was a gbwc.net) I set the domain url to redirect to freehomepages.com/gbwc and left it at that.
Recently, whether it's an actual upgrade of GoDaddy's service, or I just read the wrong stuff, I've discovered I was very very wrong. It's a "real" web host program, with at present 5GB of web space, 100 GB bandwidth, MySQL database capacity, the works (maybe not as good as something I'd have to pay $20.00 a month for, granted, but it's frickin' free with something I'm already buying from them!!!) In four years we've only filled about 20 MB, and that's with a lot of duplicate files
(Since freehomepages doesn't let you duplicate files on the control interface, a lot of "moves" have really meant new copies uploaded to a new location. )
So a lot of it is looking to be a no-brainer.
1. Gobs more storage room. We currently have 250MB; as mentioned above, the new hosting would give us 5GB: 20 times the storage room.
2. I wound't have to remote host the gbwc css stylesheets anymore (freehomepages doesn't allow .css and .js files) It might help them work for some of the people who've had problems with them.
3. Better graphic capacity. Freehomepages doesn't allow .png files either, which in my experience often have better color retension than .jpgs and if the picture is physically large, sometimes actually have smaller file sizes!
And the one that is both the most exciting to me personally, but also has a downside:
4. We could have our own, sparkly, shiny PHPBB message board hosted on it, like the ones GBI, GBHQ, and Nightsquad use. The downside, of course, is that there is no way to transfer the data from this board to a new one: Proboards remote hosts this board, and they don't allow copies of their databases; this board would still exist, of course, and losing it wouldn't be as big a deal as say if I do the same thing with the Ectozone board, but it is a consideration.
We have put over three years into this one, but it looks to be ages before Proboards upgrades their system. PHPBB is already on the cusp of a huge upgrade you can already see on the Nightsquad board (PHPBB3 Release Candidate #3--if no more significant bugs are found the next step will be a full, stable release) And certainly this board would not be deleted, just disabled for new posts.
But as with every major decision, I wanted to get the input of the other members of the team and the fans first.
As far as the main site goes, I will probably start the process soon. I will need to do some recoding on the pages, and won't activate the hosting account until I get that done: when I do, the gbwc.net domain will redirect to the new host pretty quickly, and the new site wouldn't be completely usable until I get the files transferred: though at that time, the old site will still work at the www.freehomepages.com/gbwc url, or a new url, archive.gbwc.net
(I know some of this because I'm already tinkering with the other domain I have hosted from GoDaddy: www.ectozone.net )
I await your input on the matter.
