As far as I know, there's no truth to the legend you heard about dead werewolves coming back as vampires. There might be some other obscure connection to the two species that places them as natural racial enemies or something like that as in movies like Underworld and Van Helsing.

Actully, in Slavic lore, the werewolf is closely related to the vampire; the name of the Serbo-Croatian Vukodlak vampire mean " wolf's hair". Vlokoslak, a Serbian term, and Vyrkolaka, a Greek term, are the mnames that are applied to either a vampire or werewolf. Many European superstitiond about vampires hold that they can shape-shift into various animal forms besides wolves. In Greek and Serbian lore, werewolves are doomed to become vampires after death.
